Today Lomakatsi continued our partnership with Jackson County Fire District #5 IAFF Local 2596 through a training exercise on private land, within the wildland urban interface of the town of Rogue River, OR.
A Lomakatsi crew of six, including several tribal members, thinned small diameter trees and brush to reduce fuels along roadsides and a homesite. The recent rains created an opportunity to swamper burn the slash—meaning piling and burning the cut vegetation immediately without waiting for it to cure. District 5 brought several engine resources and their crew of 21 newly commissioned fire fighters, who graduated last week from the 20-week initial training phase of their Oregon Fire Fighter Apprenticeship program.
