It’s been a busy wildfire season so far for Lomakatsi’s fire crews, who have been on near-constant assignments since mid-July. Our 20-person Type 2 Hand Crew is currently supporting response efforts on the Middle Fork Fire in Crater Lake National Park, which has burned approximately 5,000 acres and resulted in temporary closure of the park’s North Entrance Road.
The hand crew worked a full week from a remote spike camp—where supplies and food are flown in by helicopter—constructing indirect fire line, improving containment lines, and supporting burn operations. This intense work earned accolades from fire management personnel, who noted their hard work and efficiency, including their great communication, chainsaw skills, and dedication to crew well-being.
Our Type 6 Engine Crew has been on assignment patrolling in the Siskiyou Mountains Ranger District and Dutchman Peak area for potential fire starts. The hand crew is back on the Middle Fork constructing indirect fire line along roadways, and both crews are getting ready to take some rest after their second 14-day assignment of the season. The engine will head back to the U.S. Forest Service- Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest for their third assignment of what is expected to be a long season.

“I am so proud of our hand crew and engine crew. They have overcome adversity, adapted to ever-changing environments, and have performed at such a high level no matter what mission has been given to them.”

– Lomakatsi Fire Operations Manager Sean Voorhes

This season, the hand crew has also worked on the Knot Fire near Sprague River, creating and patrolling fire lines, and the Diamond Complex, scouting for opportunities to connect handline to dozer line and helping to protect Northern Umpqua Hyrdoelectric Project infrastructure. With fires expected to burn all summer long in challenging terrain, we’re so grateful for the commitment of all the crews working across the West to protect our communities and natural resources! We send out our thanks and best wishes for a safe season.
