Lomakatsi’s 5 Adopted Sites

Ashland Creek Ponds

Aided by the help of project partners, Lomakatsi is helping students, youth, and community volunteers learn about and restore regional streams. Program participants take part in hands-on, service learning activities including removing noxious weeds, planting native species, increasing wildlife habitat and stabilizing stream banks. In partnership with regional specialist, they also learn about botany, wildlife biology, fisheries, soil science, hydrology, and water quality. Our efforts turn program participants into landscape stewards through physically contributing to the future ecological legacy of their watershed.

Lomakatsi’s adopted riparian restoration sites are included in the annual Streamside Forest Recovery Week:

Willow Wind Habitat Restoration Project – Located at the confluence of Paradise and Bear Creeks at the Willow Wind Community Learning Center in Ashland, this 10 acre project began in 1997. This long-term effort has resulted in the reestablishment of a thriving riparian forest and the work continues as we extend the restoration further up and downstream.

The Ashland Creek Ponds Riparian Restoration Project – Located at the confluence of Ashland and Bear Creek along the Bear Creek Greenway, this 12 acre project was sparked in 2006 by Helman Elementary School’s vision of creating an outdoor classroom five blocks from their school. This is a collaborative community effort aimed at restoring degraded riparian habitat through the reestablishment of native trees and vegetation.  For more information, click here.

Lone Pine Creek Riparian Restoration Project – As Lomakatsi’s newest riparian restoration site, planting native trees and shrubs to create shade for fish and wildlife habitat is a high priority due to the current lack of vegetation. Cascade Christian High School has adopted this site, located in north Medford on Lone Pine Creek near another one of their adopted sites along Bear Creek. The goal of this project is to link the two sites to create one contiguous restoration effort at the confluence of Lone Pine and Bear Creek.

Crooked Creek Riparian Restoration Project – The Crooked Creek Riparian Restoration Project in south Medford is Logos Charter School’s second adopted site. Adjacent to their Bear Creek Restoration Project at Spencer Street started in 2011, this project will expand the restoration footprint to include the confluence of Crooked Creek and Bear Creek.

Icehouse Creek Riparian Project – Since 1998, Lomakatsi has worked to establish trees and vegetation along riparian areas and adjacent uplands of the north and south fork of Icehouse Creek, a mountain stream located up Dead Indian Memorial Road above 4,500 feet elevation. To date, a total of 15,000 native trees and shrubs have been planted by Ashland students as part of this 50 acre riparian and upland reforestation effort.

Additional Sites: There are three additional sites which Lomakatsi also maintains as model examples of long-term comm unity-based ecological stewardship. Lomakatsi is continuing to engage youth in our restoration work at these sites, focusing on stewardship activities such as caring for planted trees and shrubs, removing invasive species, monitoring wildlife, and other experiential learning and restoration work in addition to planting native trees and shrubs.

Medford Bear Creek Riparian Restoration Project – Spencer Street
Launched in 2011, this four acre project has been adopted by Medford’s Logos Charter School with support from numerous other local schools, youth crews and community volunteers. For more information, click here.

North Medford Bear Creek Restoration Project

Neil Creek Restoration Project
