Restoration Operations Supervisor

John serves as Lomakatsi’s Operations Supervisor, overseeing technicians, restoration crew managers, workforce personnel and subcontractor activities. John worked for Lomakatsi from 2004 through 2008 as a seasonal restoration worker and crew member, conducting labor intensive activities including forest thinning, prescribed burning, riparian planting and noxious weed abatement. He made advancements on the Lomakatsi workforce to the position of Lead Sawyer. John and his family moved to Montana for several years but returned to southern Oregon in 2012 to begin a full time position with Lomakatsi as the Lead Forestry Technician. In this role, John was responsible for managing technical forestry personnel in conducting project design and layout, data collection and field inventory, and implementation monitoring. In February of 2013, John was hired as the Workforce Operations Manager for Lomakatsi.

John’s restoration experience began as a Volunteer in Parks with an organization called Stewards of Slavianka in Sonoma County California. He was involved primarily with back country planting projects but also worked on dune stabilization and upkeep of the native greenhouse in Armstrong Redwood State Reserve. In 2002, John completed his bachelor’s degree from Sonoma State University in Environmental Studies with emphasis in Conservation and Restoration and a minor in Biology. While in college, he started working as a Restoration Technician with a non-profit called Circuit Riders. He also worked as an independent contractor in conjunction with Northwest Data Collections performing post-fire regeneration surveys for the U.S. Forest Service in the Idaho City Ranger District. Additional experience included working with High Country Forestry as a timber marker, helping implement a “thinning from below” prescription in the Klamath National Forest. He also worked as a Fire Ecology Research Assistant through Oregon State University and collected much of the data that was published in the Forest Ecology and Management journal in an article entitled Fire Exclusion Effects on Riparian Forest Dynamics in Southwestern Oregon. For three years he worked with the Bureau of Land Management in the Miles City Montana field office as a Fuels Technician.

John feels it is an honor and a privilege to serve the communities of southern Oregon. He is proud to call southern Oregon his home and elated at the opportunity to raise his two children in such a beautiful environment.
